Looking for Deer

Hunting was kind of slow and there wasn’t much activity during the last 4 days on the 5 cameras I checked so either rut is winding down early or there just weren’t any does in heat in this spot and most of the bucks were prowling elsewhere which seems more likely because the peak of the rut usually lasts until at least the 17th before it fades and the bucks start spending most of their time trying to put back on some of the weight they lost chasing does over the last month before winter sets in for real.

Deer Hunting

After struggling to see any deer in October (did call in one big guy that won the encounter) November has been good. I’ve seen 9 bucks since the 1st. Sitting for an hour or more at a time (mainly until my butt is frozen or I’m running out of daylight) sometimes calling softly some times just being quiet has worked for me on these high pressure Ketchikan area deer.

The most interesting thing on my cameras were a large pack of wolves, so I added a few more cameras to try and get more shots of them.

A main trail runs down this little valley and it’s crossed by other trails here so though it’s out in the open it could be a good spot.

I had a camera here before for years until someone “borrowed” it for several months, decided to use this spot again because wolves have passed by here fairly often in the past and it’s a good spot for deer and bear.

Set a camera here to watch the intersection of 2 main trails, judging by the tracks at least a couple wolves have used one of these trails recently.
